  • Detailing Business Plans

Why Every DETAIL Operation Needs a Business Plan
A BUSINESS PLAN is your map to the money. It tells you where you're going to get it, and how much of it you're going to be able to keep. And, like any map, the more specific the plan is, the easier it will be to get to your destination.

  • Carpet Cleaniing Science

Detailers treat carpet cleaning like a "step-child" compared to the attention given to paint finishing procedures. However, carpet cleaning is just as important.
In one of the many trade magazines I read monthly an interesting article appeared about commercial carpet cleaning authored by M. Dixon, president of Dixon & Associates.
Many of the points mentioned in his article were quite relevant to automotive carpet cleaning and for that reason I borrowed from him for this discussion.

  • Detailing Clay

IT'S MORE THAN A HANDFUL OF CLAY
THE USE OF CLAY IS A FANTASTIC INNOVATION,FOR THOSE IN THE AUTO DETAILING BUSINESS
AND SOMETHING THAT EVERY DETAIL SHOP NEEDS TO USE.

Who doesn't remember the hours we spent as children entertaining ourselves making monsters, noodles, bowls and various other things with clay? Later generations called it Play Dough, another version of the same thing.
Of course, if you were into ceramics, you actually could form real things like vases, plates, pots and bowls from clay and then bake them in a kiln to keep permanent your creative masterpiece. It seems clay has been with us since ancient times providing both recreational and practical applications.

  • Targeted Marketing

Marketing is a lot like playing darts; even though you don't hit the bull's-eye every time you can still win with the most points. Most detailers don't know who their target customer is, or who they want to attract to their business. With target marketing the goal is to continually aim for the bull's-eye, the market that will give you the most business for the least amount of money, time and effort expended.

  • Auto Clear Coat Finishes

A few years ago a good friend of mine, John Pfanstiel wrote an article on clear coat paint finishes. The presentation was directed to paint and body shop owners and technician, but the information can be very valuable to detailers too. With his permission, borrowing from this article, we can provide some good information about clear coat paint finishes.

It wasn't until the late 80's and early 90's that most U.S. auto manufacturers began to use clear coat paint finishes on their vehicles almost exclusively. For that reason every detailer must know, understand and be able to identify a base-coat/clear-coat paint finish.
